Care Guide

How to care for your pieces

Simple maintenance for lasting beauty

Daily / Weekly

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives
  • Keep away from moisture when possible

Monthly

  • Wipe gently with a slightly damp microfiber cloth
  • Dry immediately with soft cloth
  • For aged/patina pieces: don’t try to “clean” the patina away — it’s intentional

Yearly (Optional)

  • Apply a thin coat of furniture wax or beeswax for extra protection
  • Buff gently with soft cloth
  • Especially useful for pieces in humid environments

To Avoid

  • Household cleaners (Windex, bleach, ammonia) — these damage the finish
  • Steel wool or scouring pads
  • Abrasive brushes
    Prolonged water exposure
  • Direct sunlight for extended periods (can accelerate patina)

Chandeliers, pendants, sconces

Monthly

  • Dust fixture with soft cloth or feather duster
  • Check that bulbs are secure
  • Wipe glass elements gently with microfiber

Before Changing Bulbs

  • Turn off power at the breaker (not just the switch)
  • Wait for bulbs to cool completely
  • Hand-tighten only — never force

Deep Clean (Yearly)

  • Turn off power at breaker
  • Remove bulbs and glass shades
  • Clean glass separately with mild soap and water
  • Dry completely before reassembly
  • Dust metal with soft cloth
  • Reinstall bulbs and glass

Urns and keepsakes

Display

  • Keep in a stable, protected location
  • Away from direct sunlight (can fade painted finishes)
  • Not in high-humidity areas (bathrooms, basements)
  • Secure on a flat surface

Dusting

  • Soft dry cloth only
  • Don’t use any cleaners
  • Handle gently — avoid gripping delicate features

If Transporting

  • Original box if available
  • Wrap in soft cloth
  • Keep upright
  • Avoid temperature extremes

Outdoor hardware

Installation Tips

  • Pre-drill mounting holes
  • Use provided screws (or longer for thick doors)
  • Weatherproof caulk around mounting plate (optional)

Weather Protection

  • Apply paste wax annually (clear furniture wax)
  • Wipe dry after heavy rain
  • Expect natural patina development — this is desirable
  • Cast iron: watch for rust, treat with mineral oil if needed

Cleaning

  • Soft brush for loose debris
  • Damp cloth for stuck-on grime
  • Dry thoroughly
  • Never use pressure washer

Walking sticks, urn stands, display pieces

Monthly

  • Dust with soft cloth
  • Check for any loose joints or hardware

Yearly

  • Apply furniture polish or wood wax
  • Buff with soft cloth
  • Avoid water contact

Humidity

  • Wood can expand/contract with humidity — mild changes are normal
  • Severe cracking is rare but can occur in extreme climates

Drinking horns, shoehorns, horn combs

Drinking Horns

  • Rinse with warm water after use (never dishwasher)
  • Avoid prolonged soaking
  • Dry immediately
  • Not for prolonged beverage storage — serving only
  • Food-safe but not freezer or microwave safe

Shoehorns & Combs

  • Wipe with slightly damp cloth
  • Apply light coat of mineral oil occasionally
  • Store in dry place
  • Natural variation in color — this is normal

Brass has darkened unevenly:

Natural patina variation. If you want uniform aged look, apply thin coat of linseed oil, wipe excess.

Finish seems to be flaking:

Rare — contact us. May be covered under warranty.

Fixture flickering:

Check bulb seating first. If persists, likely a wiring issue — contact an electrician.

Door knocker rusting:

Cast iron needs occasional wax. Light rust: steel wool + mineral oil, then wax.
